Little Miss and I fashioned a rustic all natural E Little Miss and I fashioned a rustic all natural Easter wreath for our door this morning using our pussywillows, grapevine and moss from the yard and eggs and feathers from our girls.
Not sure how long the eggs will last, it took a bit to get them stuck on but it was fun to try and use them!
And now back to spring work!
Spring flowers captivate. Dahlias may be my diva Spring flowers captivate.
Dahlias may be my diva queens but spring flowers reign supreme. It's why I focus so much of my energy, learning and growing space on spring beauty and having it ready for everyone to enjoy ASAP in the spring. Spring is slow coming this year, but there are field tulips just starting to pop through the surface and seedlings rooting themselves in in the tunnels and I know armloads of colour are not too far off!
Happy Spring Equinox! This long winter appears to Happy Spring Equinox! This long winter appears to be coming to a close and signs of spring are appearing all around and everyone has spring fever. Lots of work to come and even more blooms to follow!
Not every day is filled with flowers when you are Not every day is filled with flowers when you are a grower and though this work is labor intensive, there is something about it I do love. It signals spring is here, my hands are in the dirt, I hear the songs of the birds and each of these beds prepped hold a lot of promise for the season to come.
The spring to do list often feels overwhelming but one task at a time and at least half of it gets done I think 😉🥴 more bed prep and planting tomorrow.
Love dahlias like me?! Dahlias are pretty amazing Love dahlias like me?! Dahlias are pretty amazing flowers to grow but they also have fascinating genetics. I started a dahlia breeding program last year and today I started the seeds produced in that program to see if I get any potential beauties this summer. Here is a super quick run down on dahlia genetics and planting tubers versus seeds!
That is a beautiful wrap on the Winter Tulip Subsc That is a beautiful wrap on the Winter Tulip Subscription - perfect timing as the temperature rises today and spring feels like it just might be in the air!
Thank-you to all of our subscribers - I really hope the tulips brightened your winter months as much as they did mine. Thank-you to @amplified for being a warm and friendly host location for pick-up.
The Spring Subscription will begin when the first of the field tulips bloom which I anticipate to be in late April. Just a couple spots left on the Spring Subscription and they can be found on our website https://littlebluebarn.ca/product/little-blue-barn-bouquet-subscription-pick-up-lbb/
Until then, it will be field prep ans planting to get ready for a beautiful summer!
The colours this week...😍. The winter subscript The colours this week...😍. The winter subscription finale heads out tomorrow and they remind me of ice cream cones.
I had a happy accident in receiving some bulbs that were labeled incorrectly but ended up working so perfectly with this palette. They are a fluffy double tulip in vanilla which pairs so perfectly with the mango and blackberry colours in the single tulips this week - creamsicles!
"It was one of those March days when the sun shine "It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light and winter in the shade" - Charles Dickens
This quote really summed up today very well. I spent much of the day transplanting in my low tunnel. When the sun shone I took off my jacket and the light in the tunnel was sublime. But as soon as the clouds rolled in, so did some wind and there was a true chill in the air.
The tunnel is planted end to end and I am sure wishing I had gotten my second tunnel up before the snow flew in the fall but so it goes. Now to nurture those young plants in the tunnel and those still in the nursery and hope for some warmer temperatures and a spring filled with colour!
All the animals love the warmth of the tunnel and greenhouse but it's important the birds stay put or they will have quite a feast on the seedlings!!
